Hub Power Company Limited – 1QFY10 Earnings Preview
Hub Power Company Limited (Hubco) is scheduled to announce its 1QFY10 results on October
28, 2009. Profitability is estimated to observe a considerable jump on the back of expected 24%
YoY increase in project company equity component of capacity purchase price (CPP). Moreover,
11.7% YoY depreciation of PKR against USD is expected to further boost escalable component of
the CPP. We expect the company to post net earnings of PKR1,271mn (EPS: PKR1.10) in 1QFY10
compared to PKR702mn (EPS: PKR0.61) in 1QFY09, an increase of 80% YoY. We do not expect
any payout as the company historically declares dividend on half yearly basis.

Hubco is continuing with its expansion activity with Narrowal power project of 214MW,
expected to come online in March 2010. Furthermore, the company is vying to build a 84MW
hydro power project, financial close of which is expected by end of October 2009. At yesterday’s
closing price of PKR31.13/share, the stock offers FY10E dividend yield of 9.2% and is trading at a
28% discount to our June 2010 Target Price of PKR43/share. BUY!

With positive news flow on Hubco’s expansion
projects and power tariff hike on the cards, the stock
at current level offers an attractive FY10E dividend
yield of 15%. In addition, the existing tariff is also set
to accelerate the dividend payments to the investors.
Based on these, we remain bullish on the stock and
reaffirm our ‘Buy’ call on Hubco.

Speculation of tax litigation for Hub Power (HUBC): According to market rumors,
HUBC’s financial auditors have advised the company to book provisioning expense for
its pending tax litigations. Assessments made by Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax
(DCIT) claim that the company did not withhold PKR1.9bn of tax at the time of issue of
shares to sponsor against project development costs incurred by them. The company
deposited PKR297mn against the above claims. While the issue has long been pending
in the courts, the company did not book any additional provisioning/expense on its books
as the management (and their tax and legal advisors) were of the opinion that the
position of the company is sound on technical grounds and eventual outcome will be in
favor of the company.

Our discussions with the management indicate that their stance remain unchanged
however they declined to comment on the possibility of booking provisioning expense in
the upcoming financial statements. In case the company books the remaining amount of
PKR1.6bn tax on their FY10 accounts, it will have an EPS impact of PKR1.4 and will
reduce our FY10 EPS forecast to PKR2.9 though we believe that the provisioning (if
any) will take place in tranches. While the stock may remain under pressure till some
clarity emerges on this front, we maintain BUY stance on the stock with fair value
currently unchanged to PKR43/share.
